  • My Hollaback...

I'm a fairly traditional southern woman, raised and homeschooled by extremely conservative parents, and sheltered from the world. Or at least I was. I started college at Tarleton State in the fall of '09, and a lot of things change. I've learned a lot about harassment, first hand, that I hope none of my friends never have to learn. I could write about getting groped on my way to a club/bar, or screamed at by some idiot in a truck on my way home, or even a more violent incident that happened later that year, but I won't. Instead I give you this little jewel, the incident that truly showed me how comfortable these 'normal' men were with their behavior, and just how acceptable it really was. I was attending a womens volleyball game with some friends, supporting our school in the regionals I think. Some guys behind us started harassing the opposing team and screaming some very vulgar things at them. A male friend took offense to that behavior, and warned them to quiet down. When they started being rude to him, I piped up. I don't remember what I said but it must have made an impression. They were quieter for the rest of the match, and we watched in peace. Afterwards, I refused a ride home and decided to walk, because my dorm was less than half a mile away and the night was beautiful. I didn't even think twice about my decision. I tried to call my boyfriend of the time who lived out of town, to enjoy a walk and talk under the stars. Just as I heard the busy tone, I began to hear yelling.  It was three of the drunk men from before, trying to get my attention. I tried to ignore them, they were being just as vulgar as before. I was terrified. They were large men, and at 5'2", i'm rather not. They continued to follow me as I asked them to leave me alone, and fought off tears. I could smell the alcohol from 5 feet away. I finally snapped when they asked my name again, and told them "It's get the fuck away from me". They just laughed and asked if it was "mexican". They followed me to the door before losing interest. There were half a dozen other people in the parking lot when they started harassing me. Talk about turning a blind eye.

I'm going to publish several post talking about some experiences I've had like this... sorry if that's not your cup of tea, i'm just in a vent-y mood.

  • Music!

Today,  a greeeeeeeeeeeeeat guest post by MacLibureet.

Music... I can just smell it now. I'm sure all of you guys are scratching your heads at the idea of smelling music. Today I am going to talk about the smells you can discover by listening to music.

Just kidding. As far as I know the only smells in music is the smell of a brand new iPod, a brand new instrument and brand new sheet music.

Music speaks for us when words escape us. Music arouses our emotions. Music makes the world happy and makes it go round. Music also can make the world angry. Take for instance Lady Gaga. She is known for pushing the envelope as far as what is appropriate for a pop star celebrity to wear, say and do. People accuse her of being Satanic... Isn't that also what they said about The Beatles, Heart, Fleetwood Mac, Journey, KISS, and Styx? Why to people jump to such conclusions? I just typed 'is Lady Gaga' into Google and what popped up as suggested searches included 'is lady gaga gay, married, bi, Christian, atheist, pregnant, male etc...' Other artists, such as Justin Bieber and Rebecca Black make people respond negatively because of their popularity and a lot of people claim to hate them. What they don't realize is that hating them just makes them more popular. A trend that I dislike with people is when a music group they like gets popular they call them sellouts and claim to no longer enjoy the group's music. What is it about being a popular group that makes your music suddenly sick? Why is there such a push to be listening to things other people don't? Doesn't that take the fun out of sharing music with people?

Think about the music you enjoy. What is it about? What do they sing about? What does the band encourage? Sometimes it's surprising to find a group's music heavily influenced by their religion, lifestyle, preferences and tastes. All in all enjoy music. If there is something you dislike than put it aside and say no further. Don't go on rampages trying to tell everybody about their evils.

Music is what feelings sound like. -Mary Anne Radmacher

What can you smell right now? What music have you been jamming out to?

Love love love the post, and my friend =)
